Main Desktop Tabs for Inpatient Nurses

 

Toolbar Overview

 

The Toolbar is located at the top of EPR’s main desktop screen, and provides key links to the UHN Intranet, EPR functionalities and other external applications. 

Toolbars vary depending on the access granted to you. Therefore, some icons visible on a Physician’s toolbar may be different from those found on an RN’s toolbar, and specific to the respective roles assigned. 

 

The following toolbar is an example from a Physician’s desktop:

Following are all the different icons available on the EPR toolbars; however, some icons listed below will not be applicable to some EPR users:

 

Icon

Description

Desktop icon

 

The Desktop icon allows you to return to the main screen of the EPR (your landing page to when you login).

Clicking on the drop-down arrow provides additional links to other commonly used areas of the EPR (Patient Lists, Print Functions, Reg/ADT, Work Queues, Internet/Other, and Chart Completion).

 

eManual link icon

 

The purple Book icon is a link to the eManual (which you are currently in). The eManual is an online resource that provides a combination of step-by-step instructions and background information on all functionalities available within the EPR.

Clicking on the drop-down arrow leads you to other useful and helpful links to information such as Ask CUSP, Release Notices, and Submitting a User Change Request (UCR).

 

Patient Search icon

 

The Patient Search icon provides a link to the Patient Search area of the EPR.

(Note: the icon looks exactly the same as the CAIS Preoperative Assessment Tool.) 

The drop-down arrow provides specific links to TGH - Patient Search and TWH - Patient Search.  For more information on patient search see Patient Search Options.

 

Intranet icon

 

Clicking on the Intranet icon will take you to the UHN Intranet Home Page.

The drop-down provides a list of other direct links to the UHN Intranet site, including the Incident Report eForm, Provider Address Add/Change/Deactivate Request form, Policies and Procedures, Standard Med Admin times, and the UHN Drug Formulary.

 

Virtual Library icon

 

The Virtual Library is an online search tool for medical journals and databases. From this menu, you may choose to open the Virtual Library, or the drug summary database called Micromedex.

 

Outlook Webmail icon

 

The Outlook Webmail icon is a direct link to log in to your UHN email account.

 

Calculator icon

 

Clicking on the Calculator icon brings you a traditional scientific calculator. The drop-down arrow provides you links to other various clinical calculators (Body Mass Index, Body Surface Area, Child-Pugh Classification, Dopamine, Effective Body Weight/Creatinine Clearance, Hemodialysis, Meal Plan Calculator, Pulmonary, and Therapeutic Bed Assessment).

 

Calendar icon

 

The Calendar icon opens a 6-month calendar view in the Work Area of your desktop, where you may view information and complete tasks. The calendar allows users to calculate a past or future date using specific time parameters from the current date.

 

Chart Review by Patient icon

 

The Chart Review By Patient icon provides four links to read-only information:

  1. Chart Review By Patient

  2. TW Old Visits

  3. TR Old Visits

  4. Specimen Accession Review

If you cannot find your patient through the Chart Review By Patient link, click on TW Old Visits or TR Old Visits (if your patient has had a visit at these sites).

Pill icon

 

The Pill icon provides a link to the Med Prep Report, and is used by Nurses to prepare medications on the electronic Medication Order Entry/Medication Administration Report (MOE/MAR) application for those units at UHN using the system. For more information, see Med Prep Report.

 

Coral Viewer icon

 

This icon launches the Coral Viewer application which allows the viewing of diagnostic images online. A separate user ID and password are required to access the Coral Viewer. For more information see Radiology Images.

 

CAIS Preoperative Assessment Tool icon

 

This icon launches the CAIS Preoperative Assessment Tool, which is an evidence based preoperative assessment system. (Note: the icon looks exactly the same as the Patient Search icon). 

The Clinical Anesthesia Information System (CAIS) is a web-based tool, and seeks to standardize the preoperative assessment.

 

CliP icon

 

The CliP icon is available to clinicians who dictate notes. The icon links directly to the online CliP program that allows dictators to review, edit, and sign transcribed notes, as well as, communicate with the Chart Completion team about incomplete items. Depending on your role, the CliP icon is also available to Health Records/Transcription staff. If you will be dictating notes at UHN, you may visit the Transcription Services intranet page for UHN Clip Education materials.

 

Old Visits icon

 

The Old Visits icon allows users to access historical visits prior to the merge of databases in EPR (UHN sites were previously separate databases). The drop-down arrow provides you links to either TW Old Visits or TR Old Visits.

 

Sign off icon

The first icon on the top right of your EPR screen is your Sign Off icon used to log off from the system. To maintain patient confidentiality and ensure your login security, always remember to log off whenever you step away from the computer. email icon

The email icon is not used at, or applicable to, UHN.

Preferences icon

The Preferences icon is not used at, or applicable to, UHN.

Help icon

The Help icon is not used at, or applicable to, UHN.

X - Close button

 

The X in the top right corner of your EPR screen shuts down the EPR application, and should not be used in substitute of logging of. For more information, see Logging On and Off.

 

 

 

Main Desktop Tabs for Inpatient Nurses

 

While the tabs that are visible to you on the Main Desktop will vary depending on your role and access/security level within EPR, the following are the tabs that most Inpatient Nurses will see on their Main Desktop. Note that while a brief explanation of each tab follows, the tabs a Nurse would most frequently use will depend on his/her role and unit considerations.

Description

Pt Selection

 

This tab allows you to search for patients across all UHN sites.

Visits are split by either IP/EP/SP Patients or Ambulatory Patients.

To search for Inpatients, you can select ALL UHN Patients and type in MRN or identifier, or you can select a by Location option and search your area.

 

Assignment

 

This tab enables a Nurse to complete Staff Assignment i.e. an organizational tool to assign patients to one’s EPR login, for quick access to those patients’ charts.

 

Work Lists

 

This is where Nurses can access unit or lab-specific Incomplete Worklists & Specimen Labels. It also houses Review Queues and Work Queues.

 

Print Functions/Reports

 

This tab houses Census Reports, patient labels to print, and Clinical Documentation Reports, among others.

 

Reg/ADT

 

Patient Registration, Admissions, Discharges, and Transfers-related functions are found on this tab. It also houses Bed Management functions.

 

PATCH

 

This tab houses the Patient Allocated Total Care Hours (PATCH) link.

 

Internet/Other

 

This tab provides access to various helpful Internet and Intranet links and resources. This is also where TR Nurses can access Toronto Central LHIN Referrals.

 

CODE ORANGE ONLY

 

As the name suggests, this tab houses functionalities to be used in the event of a Code Orange only.
