Privacy &
Information Access
The Information and Privacy Commissioner (IPC) acts independently of the
government to uphold and promote open government and the protection
of personal privacy.
The role of the IPC is set out in three acts:
Freedom of Information & Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA)
Municipal Freedom of Information & Protection of Privacy Act
(MFIPP)
Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA)
Individuals can be fined up to $50,000 and organizations can be fined up
to $250,000 for non-compliance with PHIPA.
Additionally, PHIPA requires that patients receive notification if their
personal health information (PHI) is lost, stolen, or inappropriately
accessed, collected, used, disclosed, or disposed.
