                    Information Access









                     The Information and Privacy Commissioner (IPC) acts independently of the

                       government to uphold and promote open government and the protection
                       of personal privacy.

                     The role of the IPC is set out in three acts:

                            Freedom of Information & Protection of Privacy Act  (FIPPA)

                            Municipal  Freedom  of  Information  &  Protection  of  Privacy  Act

                              (MFIPP)

                            Personal Health Information Protection Act   (PHIPA)

                     Individuals can be fined up to $50,000 and organizations can be fined up
                       to $250,000 for non-compliance with PHIPA.


                     Additionally,  PHIPA  requires  that  patients  receive  notification  if  their
                       personal  health  information  (PHI)  is  lost,  stolen,  or  inappropriately

                       accessed, collected, used, disclosed, or disposed.
