Opening the Lab Report Inbox

Acknowledging and Posting the Lab Results

Opening the Lab Report Inbox

1.    From the Records menu, select File>Lab Report Inbox

2.    The Lab Report Inbox screen appears

·        The Lab Report Inbox shows a list of all physicians who have unopened lab results.

·        The count in brackets, beside each doctor’s name, lists the number of abnormal results
followed by the total number of results (e.g. 25/42).

3.    Select your name (or the physician that you are covering for).

·        All of your patients will appear and be selected

·        The table on the right can be sorted by any of the columns by clicking on the column header

·        You can select/deselect individual lab results, as desired
e.g. you can select all of the abnormal results for viewing, to view them first

4.    Select the View  button  (download is not in use)

5.    The Lab Posting Preview Screen appears

·        The Lab Posting Preview Screen lists all of the lab results for the patients that you
have originally selected

·        Multiple results for multiple patients are displayed in one long list

·        All the lab results listed are unposted at this point

Unposted Lab Results

If a lab result is unposted, as indicated in the Posted Status field, it has not been inserted
       in the patient chart yet

If the lab result has not been acknowledged by the physician, it will not indicate signed
       off
, after both of the physician’s names (This area is blank)

Acknowledging and Posting the Lab Results

6.    To acknowledge and post the lab results, select the  <<enter>>  key after every lab result,
working your way down the Lab Posting Preview screen

·        Pressing <<enter>> will move you through each lab result and also to the header of the
next lab report so that you can confirm patient identity

·        When you get to the next patient lab result, the banner listing the patient name will turn orange,
once selected  (it is grey when not selected)

·        Press <<enter>> until the message comes up:  “You have reached the end of the list….”

·        After the last lab result is acknowledged and you have clicked OK, the lab results will be
posted (inserted) in the patient’s chart

·        When a resident posts to a chart, the lab result is blue barred in the chart, and the
staff doctor will review the lab result

·        If at any point you wish to open a patient’s chart (e.g., to review their history or previous results),
you may double-click on the header of the specific lab report.

Posted Lab Results

Once a lab result is posted to the patient’s chart, the Posted Status now says Posted

(if you open the Lab Report Inbox again)

A posted lab result will display Signed-off by and list your PSS initials and posted date

·        In general, the Ordering Physician is the staff physician

·        Residents are usually listed in the Result Copy to field

·        Once you have posted the lab result, it will say noted beside every abnormal result

Everyone is expected to review their lab results every 2 - 3 days at minimum.

Information for Residents

·        If you require advice from your supervisor, you may use the Messaging Tool in PSS
Messages Overview

·        In any urgent scenario, always speak to a staff physician -  never rely on a message
to replace an urgent conversation.

·        Log a progress note in the chart if there is any patient interaction (such a telephone call)

·        If you review a lab result before the staff physician does, the lab result will be posted to the
chart and will blue barred. The staff physician will then have to sign off the lab result in the
chart in addition to the lab Inbox.

·        If the staff physician reviews the lab result before the resident, the lab result will be posted to
the chart without the blue bars

·        Regardless of who the first physician is to view the lab results, both the staff/resident physicians
must review and acknowledge their patient’s lab results in the Lab Inbox

·        If you don’t review and acknowledge your patient’s lab results, they will remain (and accumulate)
in the Lab Inbox, even if they have been posted to the patient’s chart by the physician
