MANAGEMENT MESSAGE
This past fiscal year saw much success and growth for Volunteer Resources largely in
the ways in which volunteers, representing a wide demographic of university, college
and high school students, working professionals, internationally trained clinicians,
individuals in career transition and retirees, impacted University Health Network.
Overall, more departments, units and clinics, at all UHN sites, reached out to Volunteer
Resources than ever before, whether to engage volunteers in corporate projects that
spanned days, several months or a year, to involving them in new roles on their units, in
their departments, at information desks, in their waiting rooms, or in their clinics.
Placement supervisors played a strong part in engaging volunteers and in integrating
them within their areas of practice so that volunteers were able to benefit from their
knowledge and mentorship, grow as individuals, and feel that they were valued
members of the many inter-disciplinary teams that support patient care.
The acknowledgement by staff that volunteers were indeed their colleagues who fully
embraced UHN’s values; safety, compassion, teamwork, integrity and stewardship,
enabled volunteers to provide even more meaningful support to patients, families,
visitors and staff. It is our hope that the partnerships forged with Volunteer Resources
and clinical and non-clinical teams, continue to develop and mature, as well as lead to
new collaborations, which will support UHN’s purpose of transforming lives and
communities through excellence in care, discovery and learning while staying focused
on the needs of patients.
