Editing an Insulin Correction Scale
Insulin Correction scales can be quickly ordered from the EPR. You may select a pre-built scale or build one to your specifications. Prior to placing new orders, you must always review the current active orders for the patient to avoid duplication or conflicting orders. These orders can be found by clicking on the Order History tab located within the Order Entry screen.
Entering a Correction Scale Order
1. From the Search tab, type in the name of the medication and then click the Search button. In the example below, we will use the pre-built option to enter an order for HUMULIN R SC correction scale every 6 hours.
2. Select the desired procedure from the displayed list and click Add Order.
3. On the Typical Orders tab, select the desired option and click Add Order. Following our example, we will select the q6h with correction scale above option.
4. Click Order Summary and Accept Order to complete the order (unless you would like to edit a scale – refer to topic below).
In the example below, we will edit the pre-built correction scale for HUMULIN R SC correction scale.
Note: When creating or editing a correction scale, EPR will NOT alert you to any gaps, overlaps or other errors. Other errors include excessively high doses due to typos (e.g., 22 units instead of 2 units).
5. There are two ways to modify a pre-built correction scale:
a. Select the pre-built option on the Typical Orders tab (q6h with correction scale above), then click on the Order Profile tab.
OR
b. Select the completed order displayed on the Order Preview screen and click on the Edit button.
6. Select the scale that you would like to modify. In this example, we will change Scale #2 from give 0 units to give 1 unit.
7. Select the desired option and click OK. In this example, we will select the option, If POCT-GM 4-10 mmol/L, give ___ units. The original option, POCT-GM 4-10 mmol/L, give 0 units (highlighted in grey in the transaction line) will be automatically overwritten.
8. The system will prompt you to fill in the blood glucose levels and the associated dose (if applicable). In this example, we will enter 1 for the insulin dose (units).
9. Continue to modify each scale as necessary. Once all changes are made, review the scales for any gaps, overlaps or other errors. Click OK to return to the main Order Entry screen. Edits to a correction scale are indicated via black text.
10. Click OK. The Order Preview screen will be displayed.
11. Click on Order Summary and Accept Order to complete the order.
