The Main Desktop has three areas.

2. The task area
3. The work space area.
The Patient Desktop has four key areas.
1. Patient banner.
2. Patient Shortcuts menu.
3. Work space tabs.
4. Patient Dashboard Report.
The Sr Med Student Assignment function is used to assign patients to a specific physician for the purpose of:
· Reviewing test results;
· Creating personalized patient lists; and
· Co-signing verbal/telephone orders placed on your behalf.
This is found on the Patient Desktop, Patient Shortcut menu, Sr Med Student Assignment link. Sr Med Students may only assign themselves as Resident providers.
Sr Med Students have access to various patient lists from the Main Desktop, Pt Selection tab.
These lists will display:
· Inpatients that you have assigned to yourself. These patients will remain on this list until you un-assign them (found under Active or Active in Beds header)
· Patients with orders or results that require your electronic signature (sign off). This type of patient will disappear from the list once you have signed off on all their orders from your Sr. Med Student Inbox (found under Administrative header).
Note: Sr Med Students may only sign-off verbal/telephone orders placed on their behalf.
Sr Med Student Inbox - Multiple Patients
The Sr Med Student Inbox is a tool that allows you to review results and sign orders for multiple patients from a single location. It is found in the Main Desktop, Pt Selection tab.
The main inbox functions similarly to the Inbox on the patient desktop. This inbox also provides the option to Launch Visit(s) (open the particular patient visit to which the item relates in order perform additional review or tasks).
You will have limited filtering options (access to Inpatient visit type, active and discharge patients) and you do not have access in the Summary Grid to the last two columns (Results to Complete, Results to Sign).
The Old Visits icon on the top toolbar allows users to access historical visits prior to the merge of databases in EPR (UHN sites were previously separate databases). The drop-down arrow provides you links to either TW Old Visits or TR Old Visits.
The Inbox lists all new action and review items for a patient. This is found on the Patient Desktop, Patient Shortcuts menu, under Inbox.
It is recommended that the Sr Med Students check the inbox once every 8 hours (or sooner for higher acuity patients) to keep it up to date.
They must sign their verbal/telephone orders (both labs and medications) before they will appear in the responsible physician (resident, fellow, staff) inbox for co-signature.
They cannot sign off their verbal/telephone orders using Select All and Sign from the Detail List. Orders will remain in the inbox. They must sign off their verbal/telephone orders at the lower level of the inbox using the Edit button. Their verbal/telephone orders do not appear in the responsible physician’s (resident, fellow, staff) inbox until they are signed by the Sr Med Student. This is critical for Medication orders, which remain inactive (UNAUTH) until co-signed by an authorized person.
You may also monitor the Sign Inactive Orders section to confirm that your orders are being signed off promptly. Your orders will be removed from this section, as they are co-signed.
Medication orders can be placed from the Patient Desktop, Patient Shortcut menu, clicking on Order Entry.
Sr Med Students are able to place direct orders for labs, diagnostic procedures and medications. However, all orders must be co-signed by a responsible physician.
In addition, Sr Med Student medication orders must be co-signed before they become active orders. Until they are co-signed, these medication orders appear as unsigned verified in the Order History List when filtered by All orders. In the Medication Administration Record (MAR) they appear as UNAUTH and cannot be administered.
Note: When Sr Med Students edit active medication orders, the order will retain the original order details until co-signed by a responsible physician. There will be no visible change in the Order History list even when filtered by All Orders.
· Sr Med Students do not have access to place Medication Restrictions.
· Sr Med Students may create or edit an Online Discharge Summary, however, they may not sign-off on the note and upload it to Chart Review. This must be done by a resident, fellow, or staff physician.
