Edit Initial Events
The Edit Initial Events button allows you to edit the time of a medication dose for your patient.
The Edit Initial Events options should be used carefully as changes to the event times are not communicated downstream to the Pharmacy system.
Any scheduling time changes should also be verbally communicated to nursing and pharmacy staff to prevent medication errors.
Prior to placing new orders, always review the current active orders for the patient to avoid duplication or conflicting orders.
Note: For the purpose of this example, today’s date and time is 12-Nov 11:00.
In the Order Summary screen below, ramipril has been ordered two times per day at 10:00 and 22:00, based on the SMAT policy (UHN’s Standard Medication Administration Times) for medications. However, because this order was placed after 10:00, a Now Event was added to allow for the first dose to be administered at 11:00. To maintain the current medication schedule, you want to change the 2nd dose (the 22:00 dose), on the first day, to 23:00.
1. Select the ramipril order on the Order Summary screen. The Edit Initial Events button at the bottom of the screen will now become enabled. Select this button.
2. The screen below shows the next 10 dates of scheduled medication events (doses). Note that the first event, documented as a new event, is the Add Now Event – an extra dose scheduled at 11:00 to avoid a delay in treatment as the order was placed after the Standard Medication Administration Time (SMAT) of 10:00. Select the Tues, 12 Nov 19 2200 dose, as that is the one you would like to delay by an hour. Click on the OK button to continue.
3. You are prompted to enter the new scheduled time. Enter 2300 and click on the OK button to continue.
4. The Scheduled Time of the second dose has been changed to 2300. The original time (2200) is displayed in the Original Time column.
Note: The Add and Delete buttons should NOT be used, as these functionalities do not interface downstream to the Pharmacy system (i.e. pharmacy is unaware of such changes and will not be notified of additional doses to dispense or non-administered doses to be credited.
5. Click on the OK button to continue. Then click on the Accept Order button to complete the order.
